The allies have another chance to gain the upper hand on some maps too as long as geo nodes and panels exist. Additionally, if a character has a pupil and that pupil is standing next to them, then they gain access to any special moves the pupil has available.
In instances where setting up a team attack may not be viable, a special move might be more useful.Īccess to these is dependant on character class and gaining proficiency in the use of weapons or other special moves. They will also be used, often to great effect, by your enemies. Team attacks, however, are not limited to just your party. Thus with a decent amount of affinity and some planning, it is possible to chain team attacks between several allies against one opponent.ĭoing this will earn a combo multiplier and build up the bonus gauge for rewards at the end of the battle. The fun with team attacks doesn’t stop after performing just one! Any character that has yet to directly attack in a turn can be repositioned to be a part of a new team attack. The other criteria are not immediately visible but involve, for example, whether allies are equipped with the same weapon, or whether they have a pupil / mentor bond. This is displayed as a percentage when performing an applicable attack. Of course, like almost everything else in Disgaea, team attacks are a fairly complex system that involves, among other things, affinity with the attacker. When all four team members do attack at the same time the damage output is far higher. Disgaea does offer up a solution to help with this though in the form of team attacks.Īrrange party members appropriately around the character you’re currently attacking with and perform a normal attack to gain a chance of up to three allies joining in. Even more so for healers who are generally very poor at damage output. This makes levelling at lower levels a challenge. Unlike most other RPGs, characters only earn experience for landing a killing blow. While there is nothing special about this, Disgaea takes the level cap to extremes with the maximum level being 9999. With the exception of certain story characters that join your party as the story progresses, all characters start at level 1. Defeat, as I quickly found, usually comes when you haven’t levelled up sufficiently enough for the current battle map. This isn’t entirely accurate though, for Disgaea is all about grinding.
The first impression that people new to Disgaea are likely to have is that this is one difficult game. Not in a Japanese RPG! And yet, that’s exactly what happened to me in Disgaea PC. How could I lose to an NPC that only a few moments before had been stripped of his unique name, and had mockingly been named “Mid-Boss” instead!? That isn’t supposed to happen.
I have no such conflicting feelings here.įive hours in and I’m shaking my head. On one hand happy that I’ve defeated the final boss and completed the game on the other, disappointed that my journey is now over. Usually in such cases, I’d be experiencing mixed emotions. What on Earth have I gotten myself into? I’m sitting here watching the end credits roll. While it has been reformatted, the content has not changed. This review was originally published on.
